Farvash final exhibition, “The Scale of Existence”, shown at the Konstfack spring exhibition breaks new ground in the way of combining science and design. With her unique ability to use materials that yet are only on scientists’ table, Farvash gives us a glimpse into the future. Congratulations to her!

Rolling Optics are one of the companies who made it on to the Affärsvärldens and Ny Tekniks list of the 33 hottest young technology companies in Sweden.

The list of Sweden’s hottest young technology companies was presented during a gala in Stockholm on Tuesday evening. The common denominator for the 33 companies on the list is that the businesses are based on technical solutions, they are a maximum of seven years old and has the potential to become an economically successful company. During the nomination period the jury received more than 250 suggestions of companies.

It is flattering and important for us to be recognized as one of Sweden’s hottest young technology companies, especially given that our products have only been in production since last fall. We consider this a confirmation that our products really stand out, both technically and visually. Now we want to showcase our products to more customers for them to see the possibilities from both a security and from a design perspective, says Fredrik Blomquist, CEO Rolling Optics.

Rolling Optics manufactures the next generation of holographic material which can be used to ensure authenticity and to differentiate products on the shelf. The company was founded from the Ångström Laboratory at Uppsala University. Rolling Optics cooperates with a number label and packaging companies such as Nordvalls, Rotakett and ÅRCarton.

Rolling Optics partnering with Å&R Carton to make packaging come alive on the shelves

By combining Å&R Carton’s long experience within packaging with Rolling Optic’s crystal clear holograms, the partnership will bring a new generation of packaging materials to the market.

Å&R Carton is one of the leading companies within the folding carton industry. Their competence centre for confectionary and premium packaging is working with traditional physical features for boxes – for instance gloss effects or structure, but they are constantly seeking new products to evaluate to create an eye-catching product that stands out on the shelf.

-Most traditional effects are static, and demand customer interaction to have an effect. One of the most striking things with Rolling Optic’s materials is that when you pass by a product, the hologram seems to move, it is non-static. It comes alive on the shelf, says Ralf Mack, Director of the Premium Packaging Segment that handles confectionary and premium packaging.

The first cooperation between the two companies resulted in the first prototype packaging that Å&R Carton brought to the Luxepack tradeshow in the autumn of 2009 to evaluate customer potential, as well as the Iggesund Paperboard’s magazine Inspire, that had Rolling Optics material on the cover. The packaging and magazine were very well received and the two partners are now identifying projects where they can work together.

-I immediately saw the potential with the material, not only to be used as a traditional hologram to ensure security but to extend the hologram to be part of the packaging design. I’m sure that we will make headlines together in 2010 and put boxes on the shelves, Ralf Mack continues.

Ralf Mack explains Rolling Optic’s uniqueness with the clarity and the sharpness of the holograms as well as the fact that the material can be made very thin which makes it suitable for packaging. Another key feature is the freedom to play with the materials, everything from size to colour and patterns can be customized.

-The labels guarantee the authenticity of locally produced food, and offers an opportunity for small producers to stand out on the shelf, says Beatrice Buzsaky Johansson, Innventia

Suppliers of locally produced food often orders small quantities of packaging. To keep costs down, the packaging is often simple but functional, which sometimes can prove to be a disadvantage when competing with products from the major chains for customers’ attention.

Högteknologiska hologram garanterar äkthet i närproducerade livsmedel
